Line of Duty's Vicky McClure leaves Our Dementia Choir viewers in tears

Vicky McClure left viewers in tears tonight during powerful BBC documentary Our Dementia Choir.

The Line of Duty actress met people with different types of dementia and at different stages while forming a choir.

Vicky spoke about her own personal experience with dementia after helping her mum to care for her grandmother Iris, who died from the disease in 2015.

In the first episode of the new series, Vicky started the search andmet woodwork teacher Chris, whose frontotemperal dementia is leading to increasingly disinhibited behaviour.

She also met 31-year-old Dan, the youngest member of who was diagnosed with a rare form of genetic Alzheimer’s two years ago.

Dan’s father died at 36, though at the time no-one realised why, and there is a risk that his young twins will have inherited the faulty gene.

Vicky met pioneering scientists looking at how music can stimulate a brain damaged by dementia.

Dan seized the opportunity to take part in a cutting-edge experiment in the hope that it will help find a cure in the future.

The episode ended with a special performance of Stand By Me, which left the audience watching and viewers at home in tears.

Taking to Twitter , one viewer said: "Watching Our Dementia Choir is probably the most fantastically emotional, difficult things I've seen on TV, in a very long time. Truly heartbreaking, highlighting the affects this horrific disease has on its sufferers, and loved ones. In bits here"

"Absolutely loved this program. Shared a few tears, very emotional, very close to my heart," added another.

A third said: "Loved every second of this Vic. Tears and laughter and the love. Close to my heart."

Dan's partner Jordan thanked the choir for performing for them ahead of their wedding.

Speaking after the performance, Vicky said: "Seeing Dan get that emotional. I don't know how to deal with it. I'm trying not to cry because it's not happening to me so I feel guilty."
