The show, which is based in the Scottish Institute of Forensic Science and Anatomy (SIFA) in Dundee, will also star Breaking Bad's Laura Fraser and Stargate's Jennifer Spence.

The series will follow Molly as 23-year-old Emma Hedges who takes up a new job as a lab assistant at the institute under Professor's Sarah Gordon and Kathy Torrance but discovers that one of their fictional case studies has chilling similarities to an incident from her past.

Guest stars lined up for the show include Compston, EastEnders' Laurie Brett, Victoria actor Vincent Regan, Clique's Michael Nardone and Ill Behaviour's John Gordon Sinclair.

Scott &Bailey creator Amelia Bulimore is penning the scripts for the series which is set to begin filming in Dundee soon. McDermid's novels with fictional psychologist Tony Hill were adapted into the hugely successful Wire in the Blood series starring Robson Green.

Val said: "It's an amazing cast with wonderful scripts from Amelia Bulimore from my original idea and it's set in Dundee!."
