Line of Duty bagged two awards last night at the the National TV Awards.

The popular crime drama by Jed Mercurio was nominated and won Most Popular Returning Drama and Special Recognition.

The sixth series aired back in March, breaking viewing records after 12.8 million loyal fans tuned in to discover the true identity of 'H'.

The cast and crew of Line of Duty took to the stage to accept Most Popular Returning Drama, with Adrian Dunbar, who plays Hastings (like the wall) making an appearance through a video call.

Martin Compston took the moment to thank the people who made it all happen-the viewers and fans.

Taking to the stage, the short lived Vigil actor gave a speech, accepting the award with his cast.

During his speech he said: "This means so much, like we started as a wee show on Wednesday night on BBC Two and now we're the biggest drama on TV and it's all because of the fans, we owe everything to you."

He added: "We genuinely don't take this for granted and who knows, maybe we'll be back again."

Line of Duty was up against The Crown and Call the Midwife for Returning Drama award, and the police show that is full of twist and turns, came out on top.

Compston said in the winners room: "I think we must be the most nominated show who’s lost it so it felt great.

"We started as this wee show on a Wednesday night on BBC Two, and to see how its grown and it’s all because of the fans.

"Their enthusiasm and dedication never ceases to amaze me, so this is for everybody who’s voted for us so thank you very much."

Since Line of Duty has wrapped up, Martin Compston stayed in Edinburgh filming The Rig, a new show expected to land on Amazon Prime next year. You can see the first look images here.

While spending time in the city, the Scottish actor was spotted playing a game of football in Portobello and having night outs in Rose Street Garden.
