Line of Duty's Marcus Thurwell: The new H suspect played by James Nesbitt

Line of Duty fans almost fell of their chair as James Nesbitt popped up as dodgy copper Marcus Thurwell in the fifth episode.

Just weeks ago, Nesbitt starred in Bloodlands on BBC, another tense thriller from the mind of Jed Mercurio, and was moaning about not yet being cast in huge police corruption hit Line of Duty. He told The Radio Times that he was 'galled' Mercurio hadn't put him in Line of Duty particularly because the show is shot in Northern Ireland.

He said: "I said, ‘Come on, Jed, when are we going to get a chance to work together?' Even though Line of Duty had been shot here for years I was never considered for it, which has always slightly galled me.”

Well, it turns out that the Line of Duty cast aren't the only ones to keep a secret as Nesbitt popped up (in images only so far) the latest episode as a bent copper.

He plays Senior Investigating Officer Marcus Thurwell who appears to be involved in burying the case against the abusers in the historic Sandsview Boys Home sexual abuse case which Danny Waldron threw into the limelight in series three.

Not only that, AC-12 seemed to have connected Nesbitt's character to the murder of Gail Vella. And, though fans have never even seen his face before, he has now become a leading suspect in the search for the Fourth Man, or H.

Line of Duty continues on BBC One next Sunday at 9pm.
