Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio is reportedly considering whether or not to bring back the show for a seventh season - but Covid could delay things if it were to go ahead.
The BBC's hit TV series, which saw a peak of 12.8 million watch its season six finale and a further six million watching on iPlayer, has been one of its most successful shows with many fans begging to see its return.
The AC-12 drama ended earlier this year after it was finally revealed who the infamous 'H' figure was.
Speaking at the NTAs last month when collecting the show's Special Recognition Award, Martin said: “This means so much, like we started as a wee show on Wednesday night on BBC Two and now we’re the biggest drama on TV and it’s all because of the fans - we owe everything to you.
“We genuinely don’t take this for granted and who knows, maybe we’ll be back again.”
Co-star Adrian Dunbar, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings, also hinted at the return adding: “Thanks so much for the NTAs for this, absolutely over the moon for this.
“Most of all the great British public who so overwhelmingly supported us. And as Martin says, who knows? We might be back?”
Mercurio is also responsible for the BBC's other hit series, The Bodyguard, starring Scottish actor Richard Madden - something else he is debating bringing back.
Discussing season seven, BBC drama head honcho Piers Wenger told the Sun newspaper: "Of course, we're all massive fans of the show - we'd like to see both of them return.
"Jed is thinking [about it] but I can't really say much more than that. He hasn't committed to writing either of them."
Piers added: "I think if he were to do them he'd like to do it when Covid wasn't a thing because that production (LOD) was particularly impacted in the making of series six."
