Jed Mercurio’s addictive drama has tantalised viewers for years by withholding the identity of a fourth member of a group of corrupt senior police officers working with organised crime. The show features so many bent coppers that we’ve looked suspiciously on every character at one point or another, and in series five, the spotlight shone a bit too closely on AC-12 boss Ted Hastings, played by Adrian Dunbar.
But, in an interview with journalist Elizabeth Day on her How to Fail podcast, Dunbar made a revelation that will have all Hastings superfans breathing easy once more. Clearing up all past conjecture, he admitted that showrunner Jed Mercurio had told him that Hastings is not H.
Dunbar admitted that he was relieved when Mercurio told him, “as I spent all this time playing this character and I always thought Ted had a sense of duty and a moral core. And to have found out I was this arch-villain - I would have been in real difficulty accepting that.”
“Jed is aware of our audience and they know Ted has a sense of moral fortitude. I am glad he came out of it with flying colours,” he said.
We always had faith in the old fella; he is, after all, a man who conducts himself to the letter of the law. Meanwhile, the search for H continues - and given we’re talking about a mysterious criminal mastermind, we wouldn’t be surprised if they were hiding in plain sight all along.
