Line Of Duty returns with nearly 10m viewers after two-year hiatus

Line Of Duty has racked up a whopping 9.6 million record audience after being on hiatus for two years.

The popular BBC series returned for its sixth season on Sunday night much to viewers' delight, and became the best performing drama on UK television since Bodyguard aired in 2018.

The police drama, written by Bodyguard’s creator Jed Mercurio, beat its previous best performance of 9.1m viewers for series five’s finale back in 2019, according to overnight BARB figures supplied by Overnights.tv.

However, the most-watched programme so far this year still lies with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, raking in 11.3 million UK viewers.

Line Of Duty has had viewers gripped since it aired in 2012, and the latest season is no different.

Vicky McClure (DI Kate Fleming), Martin Compston (DS Steve Arnott) and Adrian Dunbar (Superintendent Ted Hastings) all returned to their roles this season.

However, they are also joined this series by Kelly Macdonald - who plays DCI Joanne Davidson, the person leading the investigation into the murder of a TV journalist.

Vicky spoke out about the sacrifices the crew and cast members made to make sure the filming of the series finished despite a long break due to the coronavirus.

Speaking on the BLANK podcast with comedian Jim Daly and author Giles Paley-Phillips, which is due to be released next week, Vicky spoke at length about the filming process and how she has bonded with Martin and Adrian.

Vicky was questioned whether one of the best things about being an actor was the 'family' that was made while filming projects.

She replied: "Yeah, you are working away most of the time, so that is the hardest part of the job for me - the being away from home and the learning the lines - they are two of the toughest parts.

"On Line of Duty, when lines are as hard as they are, and being away from my family and a plane ride away as we shoot in Belfast, having them there and living next door to each other in our apartments makes it all completely possible and gets you through it."
