Line of Duty fans horrified after spotting villain's subtle return after seven years

Another enthralling episode of cop drama Line of Duty had fans gripped to their screens as events unfolded on Sunday night.

But one spot left fans well and truly horrified as a villain of seasons gone by subtly returned to the set.

Way back in series two fans were gifted a look at prisoner guard Alison Merchant, played by Maria Connolly. Fast forward to season six and she was back again.

Although she may have had a minor role it was memorable enough for viewers to shout at their screens after recognising the bad egg.

And fans took to Twitter to share their findings. One fan of the show wrote: "Answering yes or no....IT’S HER"

Another asked: "Is that the kettle woman?" while a third said they "screamed" when they saw her.

They weren't alone with their gasps either, as another put: "Amazing call back. I yelped when I saw her."

The actor's original scene saw her act in a brutal fashion towards Lindsay Denton on more than one occasion.

First, fans watched in horror as the guard stood back while Denton was being sick after faeces had been mixed in her food.

Later, the guard poured boiling water over Denton's hands while telling her to stop talking to AC-12.

Shortly after the incident in which she lied on the incident report too, the guard was replaced - until now.

In the most recent episode, the guard returns in a menacing manner once again.

This time Merchant breaks Farida Jatri’s wrist when she gets her from her cell where she was being kept before being questioned by the anti corruption unit.

Elsewhere in the episode viewers also thought they spotted a huge clue in the kitchen linking H to Steph Corbett.

Others were lefts convinced that Kate is going to be murdered by DCI Davidson after an eerie foreshadowing.

Kate, played by Vicky McClure, managed to save Terry Boyle after Ryan Pilkington had tried the kill him as he looked likely to reveal all about the OCG.

After going to AC-12 over her suspicions about her own team, Kate grilled Ryan about what happened in the police car and Davidson was seen staring intensely.
