Line of Duty criticised after complaints flood in following controversial comment

Popular TV drama Line of Duty has been criticised after a controversial comment was made in the script.

The BBC One show returned for its sixth series on Sunday night (March 21) as millions of viewers tuned in to catch up on the iconic AC12 unit.

Starring Adrian Dunbar, Martin Compston and even Trainspotting star Kelly McDonald, the show has become a huge hit over the last few years.

However, in the days after the latest episode, a number of complaints have been made to the BBC after a comment made by Adrian Dunbar's character, Ted Hastings.

Hastings is one of the main stars in the show which sees the police boss head up the internal investigations unit throughout every series.

But on Sunday, the character made a statement about another character, Terry, a Down Syndrome character, that many found uncomfortable.

Played by Tony Jessop, the character was arrested in the episode for the murder of a journalist, Gail Vella.

The character was referred to as an "oddball" by Superintendent Hastings - forcing the BBC to comment, reports BirminghamLive.

The BBC said: "Superintendent Ted Hastings' comments were not in reference to the character Terry Boyle's disability - Ted Hastings had never met Terry Boyle.

"Hastings was looking only at the evidence against Boyle, namely the press cuttings of Gail Vella found in his flat.

"The word 'oddball' means an eccentric person and has no meaning or connotation of disability and Hastings was referring to the stalker/obsessed fan theory of Gail Vella's murder."

Other cast members returning included Vicky McClure, the East Midlands actress from This is England who plays Kate Fleming.

The ongoing sixth series airs each Sunday evening at 9pm with episodes available on the BBC iPlayer after broadcast.
