Line of Duty creator says there could be a new series all about Chief Constable Philip Osbourne

Jed Mercurio has hinted that if there were to be another series of the hit drama, Line of Duty, there was room to focus on bad cop Chief Constable Phillip Osbourne.

Osbourne, who is played by Welsh actor Owen Teale in series one and series six, was one of several suspects who viewers and AC-12 thought could be H, or the Fourth Man. That Fourth Man turned out to be an incompetent buffoon (or was he?) Ian Buckells, and you can see more on him here.

Speaking to website Den of Geek, Mercurio is asked whether if there is more Line of Duty, could it feature on Osbourne?

"I think that if there is more Line of Duty then clearly there’s potential there," he said, referencing Teale's character.

"He’s someone who retains high office who is an outright liar and has been involved in corruption in the past in terms of the Karim Ali case and the Lawrence Christopher case.

"Clearly there would be potential there if we wanted to explore it," he said, before adding that it is "too early to say whether we ever would."

The interview is a deep dive into Mercurio's thoughts behind series six, which ended earlier this month drawing in a record 12.8m viewers, but he's still non-committal on whether there will be more.

Asked if series six is a fitting finale for the show or a clearing out of old cases, before a new start, he said: "I’d say it’s too soon. It’s too soon to draw that conclusion. It could be either of those, or it could be something different."
