Line of Duty cast's Ted Hastings has Belfast fans in hysterics with new catchphrase

You've really done it now, fella.

Northern Ireland's favourite TV cop Ted Hastings has a litany of brilliant local catchphrases but his latest is up there with his best.

On the first episode of series 5 of Line of Duty , aired on Sunday night, Hastings came out with the Belfast classic: "I didn't float up the Lagan in a bubble".

Played by Co Fermanagh born actor Adrian Dunbar, the line was delivered seamlessly in the middle of a heated scene.. but it probably made most local households burst out laughing.

Speaking this week, the show's writer Jed Mercurio revealed that the line was actually the result of an audience at an event held in Belfast while he was penning the series.

At the MAC he was challenged by BBC broadcaster William Crawley to insert a previously unused colloquialism into the new series.

Mercurio said: “We did an event at the MAC and I asked the audience to throw out some colloquialisms. I have to say some were rubbish but there were a couple that were very good and there was one that for me felt like it was so insane that it was irresistable.”

He added: “You’re never going to top that one, it’s like the pinnacle.”

At a Q&A event at the BBC Blackstaff studio, Mercurio was also asked about actor Dunbar's newfound 'sex symbol' status.

He joked: "I think he always felt that was his destiny."
