Line of Duty cast's brutal exits - from jaw-dropping crimes to gruesome murders

Line of Duty has finally returned to our screens after an agonising two year wait.

And there was the usual amount of sinister goings on, mysterious corruption and confusing police language in the series 6 opener on Sunday night.

Kelly Macdonald is the latest star of the show playing DCI Joanne Davidson, the senior investigating officer of an unsolved murder whose unconventional conduct raises suspicions fro AC-12.

It remains to be seen how long she will last in the explosive BBC police drama as many leading characters are dramatically killed off in all manners of gory ways.

Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston have managed to survive the savage cull of characters across five explosive series of the show, but will one of the beloved main characters be next?

Here is a look at the jaw-dropping ways some of the former cast members left the series and what they've been up to since.

Warning: This does contain spoilers from the previous series of Line of Duty - you have been warned.

Series 1

Lennie James - DCI Antony Gates

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Gates was awarded Officer of the Year for having the best crime figures of any unit in the Central Constabulary.

However, this led to Tony being investigated by AC-12 as they suspected his remarkable numbers were so high because of corruption.

All this happened just as Gates' troubled personal life begins to collapse and he is eventually forced to go on the run wile trying to clear his name.

Realising there was no way out, Gates stepped in front of an oncoming truck at the end of the first series.

Popular actor Lennie James is best known for his role as Morgan in The Walking Dead and spin off Fear The Walking Dwad.

He has also appeared in Jericho, Snatch and is the writer and star of Sky Atlantic drama Save Me.

Series 3

Keeley Hawes - DI Lindsay Denton

Keeley Hawes played Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton in series 2 and 3 (World Productions)

Detective Inspector Lindsay Denton was the only survivor of an ambush on a transport convoy for a protected witness in series 2.

With several police officers dead, attention quickly turned to Denton and she was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Denton claimed she was innocent but received a life sentence, although she was acquitted in series 3 because of an alleged sexual relationship with Steve.

She was killed by Dot Cottan when she refused to take a bribe to conceal evidence in the Danny Waldron murder investigation.

Actress Keeley Hawes has been on almost every show going on TV, including Ashes to Ashes, Spooks, The Durrells and Upstairs Downstairs.

She worked on Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio's other BBC Drama, Bodyguard, and most recently appeared in Finding Alice and It's a Sin.

Daniel Mays - Sergeant Danny Waldron

Sergeant Danny Waldron, an Authorised Firearms Officer in series 3, came under investigation by AC-12 as part of routine procedure after shooting a suspect.

But the team started a deeper investigation when they discovered the fatal shooting may have been unlawful.

He met a grisly end when he was shot in the necl by DC Hari Bains on the orders of nasty Dot Cottan.

But his death resulted in an investigation into historic child sex abuse as he had written down a list of names of those who abused him as a boy.

Actor Daniel Mays has had roles in EastEnders, The Bill, Ashes to Ashes, Doctor Who and Mrs Biggs.

He has appeared in the films Made In Dagenham, Dad's Army and 1917 and mostly recently starred in Netflix drama White Lines.

An ambitious sergeant in a police armed response unit whose file crosses AC-12’s desk after the fatal shooting of a criminal suspect.

He played train robber Ronnie Biggs opposite Sheridan Smith in Mrs Biggs, and diarist Samuel Pepys in ITV’s The Great Fire. More recently, he has appeared in Sky Comedy’s Code 404 and Netflix drama White Lines.

Neil Morrissey - DC Nigel Morton

Detective Constable Nigel Morton was Anthony Gates' closest friend and colleague, who had been resigned to desk duties after a leg injury until being brought int TO-20.

The distrustful copper was faking his injury to receive disability benefits and was selling police information to the press.

Morton was played by actor Neil Morrissey across the first three series of Line of Duty.

Famous for being the original voice of Bob the Builder, Neil is also known for his role as Tony on men Behaving Badly and Eddie Lawson in Waterloo Road.

The actor has also appeared in Boon, Skins, Neighbours, The Good Karma Hospital and Unforgotten.

Series 4

Thandie Newton - DCI Roz Huntley

Detective Chief Inspector Roz Huntley was at the centre of AC-12's investigation into the mishandling of evidence in series 4.

After being pushed to get results in Operation Trapdoor, Roz charged and innocent man and was reported by forensics expert Tim Ifield.

Huntley went to Ifield's flat to intimidate him and ended up banging her head on the kitchen counter in a scuffle.

Believing she had died, Ifield bought an electric saw to help dispose of her body but Huntley woke up just seconds before and turned it on her attacker.

Throughout the rest of the series, Huntley tried to cover up her crime but her injured hand got infected and had to be amputated.

She was rumbled by Ac-12 and sentenced to 10 years behind bars for the manslaughter of Ifield and perverting the course of justice.

Not much needs to be said about BAFTA-award winning actress Thandie Newton, who has appeared in movies The Pursuit of Happyness, Mission: Impossible 2, 2012 and Run Fatboy Run.

She's also starred in TV shows ER as Kem and Maeve the android in HBO series Westworld.

Lee Ingleby - Nick Huntley

Nick Huntley was Roz's loving husband and an old friend of slimy lawyer Jimmy Lakewell.

The corporate solicitor came under suspicion in series 4 when Steve was brutally attacked at his office and left in a wheelchair.

But it was later revealed the whole thing had been set up by his wife, who he feared was cheating on him due to her shifty antics.

Actor Lee Ingleby will be known to Harry Potter fans as Stan Shunpike - the Knight Bus conductor in The Prisoner of Azkaban.

He has also appeared in Inspector George Gently, The A Word and was the voice of Bob the Builder between 2015 and 2018.

Jason Watkins - Tim Ifield

Tim Ifield was the forensics expert who didn't last very long on the show.

After raising concerns with DCI Huntley about the contamination of evidence, Ifield turned yo AC-12 because he believed she had manipulated the evidence to frame a suspect.

Huntley went to confront Ifield in his flat leading to a row that ended with her hitting her head on the kitchen counter and seemingly dying.

Ifield bought a power saw to dismember her body but Huntley woke up and his neck was slashed during a struggle - with most of the series covering her attempt to escape justice.

After AC-12 uncovered her crimes, Huntley eventually confessed to killing Ifield, who was played by Jason Watkins.

The British actor won the Best Actor TV BAFTA in 2015 for his lead role in The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies.

He has also appeared in Being Human, Trollied, the Nativity films and as Prime Minister Harold Wilson in season 3 of The Crown.

Series 5

Stephen Graham - John Corbett

Legendary actor Stephen Graham rocked up in series 5 of the show as the main villain.

We first saw him and his crew hijacking a police transport carrying drugs and shooting down many officers in the classic black balaclavas.

However, it transpired that Corbett was actually operating deep undercover in the Organised Crime Syndicate but had been uncontactable for months while committing serious crimes outside of his permitted remit.

In a shocking twist few saw coming, Corbett had his throat slit in the fourth episode by Ryan Pilkington when Lisa McQueen worked out he was a rat.

One of the biggest names to take part in the show, Stephen had already appeared alongside Vicky McClure in the This Is England film and series.

The Scouse actor has starred in many major films such as Snatch, Gangs of New York, The Irishman and two Pirates of the Caribbean films.

He's also been a small screen star, appearing as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire and in ITV dramas Little Boy Blue and White House Farm.

Tony Pitts - DCS Lester Hargreaves

Detective Superintendent Lester Hargreaves frequently came into conflict with AC-12.

Part of the Major Violent Crime unit in series 2, he was bak in series 4 on the Murder Squad then Series and Organised Crime unit in series 5.

Hargreaves was blackmailed into working for the Organised Crime Unit by Lisa McQueen, who threatened to expose he was having sex with young girls in one of their brothels.

The corrupt copper was shot in the legs by John Corbett, who believe he was H, which led to him bleeding to death in hospital.

His corruption was then exposed, but AC-12 worked out he could not have been H because he had no contact with other corrupt officers.

Actor Tony Pitts previously starred in Emmerdale as Archie Brooks, who was dramatically killed in the explosive plane crash in December 1993.

He also played Sergeant Moss in Peaky Blinders, played two different characters in Heartbeat and appeared in Star Wars spin-off Rogue One.

Polly Walker - Gill Biggeloe

Gill Biggeloe was a lawyer who worked for Central Police to make sure AC-12's investigations held up in court.

First introduced in series 3, Biggeloe returned in series 5 as the Senior Legal Counsel for the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner.

However, it was revealed she was involved with the Organised Crime Syndicate and after being arrested was nearly killed by PC Tranter in the ladies toilet.

Biggeloe was stabbed but managed to survive when DS Arnott shot Tranter - and the former lawyer testified against the crime syndicate and was given a new identity.

Actress Polly Walker, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in drama series Rome, has also appeared in Waking the Dead, The Syndicate, Age Before Beauty and Netflix series Cursed.

But she's now probably most famous for playing the scheming Lady Featherington in Bridgerton.
