Lincoln City player banned for violent conduct against Bristol Rovers after angering Joey Barton

Lincoln City defender Lewis Montsma has been banned for three games after admitting a charge of violent conduct on Bristol Rovers defender James Connolly.

Gas manager Joey Barton fumed after the game last Saturday, believing several key decisions – which he described as "soul-destroying" – went against his team including Ryan Loft's red card in the first half and the subsequent decision not to dismiss Montsma after catching Connolly with his arm in the 81st minute

After the conclusion of the 1-0 defeat at Sincil Bank, Barton took to Twitter to vent his anger, posting a video that clearly showed Monstma swinging his arm into the face of the Gas defender.

Barton told reporters the club would send footage of the incident to the Football Association and on Friday it was announced Montsma had been punished for his actions.

"Lincoln City's Lewis Montsma has been suspended for three matches following an incident in their EFL League One game against Bristol Rovers on February 11," an FA spokesman said.

"The defender's behaviour in the 81st minute was not seen by the match officials, but it was caught on camera and he subsequently admitted that it constitutes violent conduct.

"Lewis Montsma contested the automatic penalty for violent conduct but an independent regulatory commission maintained that it applies during a subsequent hearing."
