‘Limitless pettiness’: The Kennedy family is mourning a tragic death, so naturally Trump decides to attack them

Once again, the Kennedy family is in mourning. I don’t need to go into the periodic tragedies that befall them, though the latest is particularly sad. Yesterday, 35-year-old Tatiana Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy, died from acute myeloid leukemia.

Schlossberg was an environmental journalist and Bergen Record municipal reporter, and was diagnosed with the condition on May 25, 2025 – the same day her second child was born. A frantic battle ensued involving months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, but neither was effective in stopping the condition.

Schlossberg herself wrote about this in a heartwrenching article titled “A Battle With My Blood”, in which she detailed her shock at feeling perfectly healthy when she received her diagnosis and the toll fighting it has taken on her. Now the Kennedy family is grieving her.

So, naturally, now’s the time for Donald Trump to wade in and make everything so much worse. He chose this moment to launch a broadside at the Kennedys for their perfectly understandable fury over him renaming the Kennedy Center the “Trump-Kennedy Center” – or to be more precise “the Donald J Trump and the John F Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.

Trump claims that the Kennedys have “neglected” the Kennedy Center, that they don’t fund it, engage in its administration, and that the family doesn’t support the arts but only themselves.

Read the room…

Maybe that’s all true, but it’s not clear that the Kennedys are even expected to involve themselves in the foundation’s day-to-day running. But even if they were, going after them mere hours after they announce the untimely death of a family member is just cruel.

The reactions are what you’d expect:

At this point, why should we expect anything better from him? Trump twisting the knife on a grieving family is rapidly becoming a dog-bites-man kind of story. The real surprise would be if he displayed even a molecule of empathy, kindness or tact towards anyone, ever.

But, frankly, if we ever saw Trump display those qualities, we’d also peek out of the window in the hopes of seeing a pig fly.
