Limited TV series seem poised for a standout moment after Golden Globes nominations

Step aside, long-running prestige TV. It’s time for the limited series.

Standing out among top contenders at Wednesday’s Golden Globes nominations were a bevy of limited series shows, including “The Undoing,” “Ratched,” “Lovecraft Country” and “The Queen’s Gambit.”

“The Undoing,” HBO’s murder mystery starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, and “The Great,” Hulu’s satirical comedy about the rise of Catherine the Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, each earned four nominations, including a best comedy series nod for “The Great.”

Ryan Murphy’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel, “Ratched,” earned three nominations, including best drama series, best performance by an actress in a drama series for Sarah Paulson and best supporting actress for Cynthia Nixon.

Hulu’s steamy “Normal People” saw honors for best limited series and star Daisy Edgar-Jones.

“The Flight Attendant,” which was initially presented as a limited series before being renewed for a second season, was nominated for best musical or comedy series and best actress in a musical or comedy series for star Kaley Cuoco.

Netflix’s hit chess series, a surprise 2020 favorite, earned a best actress nomination for star Anya Taylor-Joy and a best limited series nomination, while “Lovecraft Country,” snubbed in the acting categories, was nominated for best drama series.

With “Fleabag” and Phoebe Waller-Bridge out of the picture, a new slate of comedies eked their way in, including Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso and HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant,” while critic favorite “Schitt’s Creek” dominated once again.

“The Crown” led the pack with six nominations, including best drama series and acting nods for Josh O’Connor, Emma Corrin, Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson and Helena Bonham Carter.

“Ozark” went home with four nominations and Netflix’s oft-maligned “Emily in Paris” earned two surprising nods.

Other shows sneaking onto the list include “Hunters,” “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” “Hollywood,” “Killing Eve” and “The Mandalorian.”
