Coronavirus: Only six people can meet indoors in Wales from Monday

The First Minister is set to announce new rules in Wales to limit the number of people who can meet indoors to six.

The strict measure, which follows the "rule of six" announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday and by Nicola Sturgeon in Scotland on Thursday, is designed to control a sharp rise in coronavirus cases and protect public health in Wales.

Mark Drakeford will set out the changes to the rules, which will come into force across Wales on Monday, later today (Friday, September 11). Follow live updates from his press conference here.

The new limit of six people, who must all belong to the same extended household group, will only apply indoors. The rule will not apply to children aged 11 or under. It will apply in all pubs, restaurants and private homes.

The Welsh Government said there will be no change to the current rules, which allow up to four households to form an exclusive extended household in Wales, and no change to the rules on meeting outdoors which allow up to 30 people to meet.

A Welsh Government spokesman said that more details will be revealed on Friday.

The changes come in the same week Caerphilly County Borough became the first place in Wales to enter a local lockdown and residents in Merthyr and Rhondda Cynon Taf were asked to adhere to tougher restrictions.

The spike in confirmed cases has been linked to people meeting and socialising with others indoors but without social distancing, says the Welsh Government

The new changes will apply to the whole of Wales apart from Caerphilly County Borough Council area. Local lockdown will continue to be enforced in Caerphilly where restrictions include a suspension on extended households meeting indoors.

On Wednesday, Mr Johnson announced a ban on meetings of groups of more than six people from up to six households in England, applying indoors and outdoors from next Monday.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's First Minister, introduced a stricter version of Boris Johnson’s “rule of six” for gatherings in Scotland on Thursday, limiting gatherings to groups of six from just two households which would indoors and outdoors, including in private gardens.
