Limerick teenager Oisin O'Callaghan wins world mountain bike title

Oisin O'Callaghan continued a great year for Irish cycling by winning the Junior World Mountain Bike Championship title today in Austria.

The Limerick teenager won the Junior Men’s Downhill event ahead of Britain's Daniel Slack and James Elliot at Saalfelden Leogang in Salzburg.

O'Callaghan, 17, came home in a time of 4:02.142, just over two seconds ahead of Slack.

"I don't think it's sunk in quite yet, I think later on it will," said O'Callaghan, who signed a professional contract with YT Bikes and The YT Mob earlier this year.

"It's a bit overwhelming at the moment. I think every racer aims to win but a top five would have been really good.

"Everyone had been sending me messages and hoping that I'd do well."

It follows the cycling heroics of Carrick-on-Suir's Sam Bennett who claimed the green jersey at the Tour de France last month.
