Limerick student fighting for life after kayaking incident in river near Glencar, Co Kerry

A young student is fighting for her life after the kayak she was in upturned while on a trip with the University of Limerick.

Another male student, both believed to be in their 20s, also got into difficulty on a river near Glencar in Co Kerry.

A search and rescue operation was launched shortly after 2.30pm on Saturday in rough river waters near Caragh Lake - part of the Reeks District. 

The young woman, believed to be from Co Cork, was airlifted to University Hospital Kerry.

The other kayaker was taken to hospital in Tralee by ambulance where his condition is described as stable.

The two UL students were among a group of 20 others kayaking on the river. 

All of which are members of the University’s kayak club.
