Limerick's Diarmaid Byrnes hit with one-match ban

Limerick defender Diarmaid Byrnes will sit out Sunday’s Allianz Hurling League tie with Waterford after picking up a one-match ban.

The Patrickswell man was proposed the suspension for a striking offence having clashed with Galway’s Jason Flynn following the final whistle as Limerick lost their 14-game unbeaten run at Pearse Stadium last Sunday.

The incident was not picked up by match referee James Owens or his officials at the time but was subsequently reviewed by the CCCC and a one-match ban was proposed.

Byrnes had the option of taking the matter to the Central Hearings Committee but chose to accept the suspension., the Irish Examiner has reported.

It comes after Limerick boss John Kiely performed a u-turn and apologised to Galway after accusing their players of simulation in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s game.

Kiely said that he had revised his views after watching the game back on video.
