Limerick ‘have given assurances’ that Sean Russell will not be out of pocket after knee surgery

Limerick ‘have given assurances’ that Sean Russell will not be out of pocket following knee surgery, Fran Gavin has claimed.

The midfielder had surgery on a cruciate ligament injury he sustained in a game earlier this season.

The day before the operation, the cash-strapped club - which is seeking new investors - informed him they could not foot the outstanding hospital bill of €4500.

The hospital has since billed Russell - an amateur player - for that sum.

League director Gavin said: “Anybody playing for the club shouldn’t be out of pocket if you get injured playing for the club.

“It’s important the club address that very quickly. He had to get a quick operation and it’s between the club, the player and the company who did the operation.”

Asked if the FAI can intervene, Gavin said: “We’d like the club to sort it. We’ve been given assurances by the club they will so the player is not out of pocket.

“If the issue is not addressed, we’ll have a look at the issue.”

Limerick have been late paying player wages and expenses this season and Gavin added: “It’s very disappointing to hear what’s happening.

“We’ve been given assurances that the matters will be sorted very soon. I’m surprised it has happened because their output on players’ salaries are minimum.”
