Limerick FC have tonight been slapped with a 26-point deduction that sees them finish the season rock bottom of the First Division.
The troubled club went into Examinership last month and today’s punishment was dished out by the Club Licensing Committee.
A statement from the SSE Airtricity League read: “Following the appointment of an Examiner by the High Court in September 2019, Limerick FC has been sanctioned by the independent Club Licensing Committee and deducted 26 points.
“The club will be deemed to have finished 10th in the 2019 SSE Airtricity League First Division table.”
Limerick finished the season in sixth position with a total of 36 points. Now, they sit bottom - a point behind Wexford.
On September 6, the High Court heard that ‘Munster Football Club Limited’ - the trading company behind the First Division club - has debts of approximately €490,000.
An examiner was appointed for a 100 day period and one of their tasks was to see if investors could be found.
The High Court was told of four expressions of interest in the club. One of these was described as a ‘formal’ expression of interest.
In the days before that High Court appearance, the FAI launched a second investigation into a Limerick FC match for ‘unusual betting patterns’.
