Limerick FC seek youth licence after opting not to apply for senior League of Ireland status

Limerick FC will meet the National League Executive Committee (NLEC) tomorrow to seek a youth licence.

The troubled Munster club did not apply for a First Division licence despite a recent court ruling that they should be allowed to.

Limerick were granted additional time by the FAI to submit a licensing application but by last Wednesday’s deadline, they had not done so.

Owner and chairman Pat O’Sullivan wants to maintain a club presence in the underage leagues and will seek clarity from the NLEC tomorrow.

It means the First Division will - as expected - be a 10-team competition, playing a 27-match season with playoffs to be factored in.

Shamrock Rovers II were awarded a First Division licence last week but rival clubs remain furious at their inclusion in the second tier.

The threat of boycotting their games remains a live prospect.

Meanwhile, Cork City officials held lengthy talks with FAI top brass in Abbotstown today to iron out issues over their Premier Division licence.

In December, it was revealed that the club had a tax liability of €88,817 but while it has been far from plain sailing behind the scenes, their licence was approved this evening.

That should open the door for Preston North End who are poised to establish a partnership with the Rebels that will provide a much needed cash injection.

Athlone Town were also awarded their First Division licence having satisfactorily addressed an admin issue regarding their artificial pitch.
