Lime Street 'improvements' as stalled works await restart

A number of improvements have been made around the Lime Street area in a bid to make it safer for pedestrians.

The city's iconic gateway has been hampered by incomplete roadworks since the project's initial contractor, NMCN, went into administration in October.

Since then, large portions of the street have remained dug up and fenced off with many of the original road crossings suffering interference from the on-going works.

This has resulted in key events being moved away from the area, including Sunday's Remembrance Day service which moved from the cenotaph outside St George's Hall to the Anglican Cathedral.

Towards the end of October, Liverpool City Council announced Huyton Civils had been appointed to secure the site and carry out remedial works.

These works have resulted in new safe pedestrian crossings being installed at junctions at London Road, St John's Lane and St George's Place.

Elsewhere across the site improved pedestrian walkways, lighting and signage has also been added.

A new tender for the completion of the works at Lime Street is expected to be advertised in December.

It is hoped the scheme will be completed by spring 2022 once a new contractor is assigned.

The Lime Street development is part of the City Centre Connectivity Scheme, a project that has proven controversial for its rising costs, effect on public transport routes and now significant delays.

One part of the scheme at The Strand recently completed its first phase of works with the addition of new pedestrian crossings and a cycle lane.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: "Huyton Civils are currently on site at Lime Street securing the area and carrying out remedial works.

"A full inspection of the site is also being carried out and will include any suggested revisions to the works. The suggested revisions will go on to inform the tender for the completion of the works.

"The tender for a new contractor to complete the works will be advertised before Christmas."

Liverpool City Council has previously apologised for the delay to the works at Lime Street.

Speaking back in October, Cllr Daniel Barrington, Cabinet member for Climate Emergency, Transport and Environment, noted how the delays had "tested people's patience".

He said: “The stalling of Lime Street has further tested people’s patience which I understand.

“Our Highways team are working flat out to get this hugely important scheme back on its feet as quickly as possible, and I’m confident that by the run up to Christmas the site will be more accessible for pedestrians than it currently is.”
