Limavady United striker Alex Pomeroy confident Roesiders can secure Championship status

Limavady United have “no doubts” they can retain their Championship status after their convincing four-goal victory at PSNI on Saturday, Alex Pomeroy has explained.

The striker was on target for the basement club in their resounding victory at Newforge, which moved them to within three points of the South Belfast side.

“Our aim is simply to win six points from our last two games, we have no doubts we are capable of it,” Pomeroy told Match On Tuesday.

“Our last game is at home to Knockbreda so if results go our way next week then we have the opportunity not only to avoid relegation, but to move clear of the play-offs too.

“The players now have in their heads that we can pull off a great escape... people have written us off, people have said we were already relegated – we want to prove them wrong.

“There’s two teams who we can catch in the final two games and that is what we are intent on doing.

“We are aiming for six points from six now and we know we can put in the performances and get the results weneed.”

The Roesiders have now won three of their last four matches and have momentum going into the final two Championship matches, giving them- selves a chance of survival.

“We are on a good run at the moment and the spirit in the dressing room is really good,” the striker continued.

“We do not need to look at the table or think about it, we know the pressure is on us to win games and when it’s that clear cut, you cannot think of anything else.

“On our bus journey down to the ground on Saturday the message was simple – if we lose we are down, and even if we draw that would probably be it for us too.

“We were all fired up and we knew we needed to stand up and be counted – every single player did so and now we have a real opportunity to kick on.

“In the past month or so all the players have turned up and we have really turned a corner in terms of both results and performances.

“Our only regret now is that this run of form didn’t start earlier... that we did not do our- selves justice up until now.

“But this is a young team and we now have a year experience under our belts if we do stay up, and next year we could push on.”

The former Institute and Dergview striker has now found the net six times in his last five outings and has been pivotal in his side’s recent victories.

“It’s a great run of form, and obviously I’m happy its coming at the business end of the season,” he added.

“But there is a bit of regret too, because I had a few niggling injuries at the start of the campaign which made it hard to get going. So I have a feeling that I’d have been able to get a lot more goals this season had I avoided those niggles, but hopefully I can continue in my run of form.

“Me and the boss Sean [Friars, right] are close and we know a lot about each other, we stayed in contact since our days at Institute and when he approached me I had no doubts about coming to the club.

“Sean did a fantastic job at Stute bringing players through and we all enjoyed his coaching methods, so he definitely deserves his shot at first-team management.

“People might look at it and think that we are in the relegation zone but Limavady have a whole new team from last year and are one of the smaller clubs in the division.”

Limavady travel to Loughgall this Saturday with a 3pm kick-off.
