Beloved British songstress and theatrical storyteller Lily Allen has defended the West End Girl tour after punters criticised multiple aspects of the show.
ICYMI, the “Tennis” singer is currently a busy bee with the UK leg of her latest live project, Lily Allen performs West End Girl, which features all of the juicy tracks that dive deep into her divorce with Stranger Things‘ star David Harbour.
Although fans get to see the tea spilled live, some folks weren’t too happy with what they saw.
One person in particular, Rupert Hawksley (@ruhawksley), took their grievances to X, pointing out that Allen had no support act, didn’t interact with fans, arrived late and wrapped the show quite quickly.

* No support act
* Arrived on stage at 9:10pm
* All wrapped up by 10pm
* Not one word to the audience
* £86 to sit in the gods
Responding head-on, Allen took to X, quote-tweeting Hawksley’s tweet with an explanation of why she was late.
“There is a support act,” Allen began.
“The show has always been advertised as ‘Lily Allen performs West End Girl’. I was a few mins late as my tights were laddered and I had to change them.”
Furthermore, Allen added that the show runs “over an hour” matching the West End Girl‘s run time, and that her decision to not interact with the audience was an “artistic choice”.
“It’s my artistic choice not to talk to the audience, the fourth wall helps with the storytelling. Most people find it to be effective,” the singer penned.
“I don’t want anyone to feel ripped off. Everyone on this tour is really working very hard to give people the best show we possibly can, and I’m extremely proud of it.”

The show has always been advertised as “Lily Allen performs West End Girl.”

The show is just over an hour as it’s just the album in its entirety.

Before Allen’s reply, Hawksley made a note attached to his original tweet, writing, “To be clear because this is obviously framed in a negative way (my fault). The performance was brilliant — but it can’t be right to charge that much for an hour, late on Sunday night.”
In a response to an Allen fan — who defended the singer’s decision to not interact with the crowd and confirmed that a small orchestra played before she appeared on stage — Hawksley said it was “a bit weird” that she didn’t have a support act nor thank fans for attending the show.
Totally. I was not critical of that element, it was advertised what she would and wouldn’t play. But no support act and not even a ‘thank you so much for coming’ was a bit weird

“I’d happily concede that I’m a bit weird, though,” Allen said in response.
According to the BBC, while Allen doesn’t have a traditional band or singer to hype up the crowd, she does have a “small orchestra”, known as the Dallas Minor trio, who perform some of Allen’s iconic tracks like “LDN”, “Not Fair” and “The Fear”.
Punters on X also confirmed that concert-goers are encouraged to sing along as lyrics to the songs are projected on a screen.
the support act is a group of cellist playing lily allen songs for the audience to sing along with karaoke style, it’s super fun! and a great way to let us hear her hits when the main show is exclusively the new album

The support is a string quartet playing Lily Allen songs with the lyrics projected on a screen so the audience can sing along. They will have a name but they aren’t there playing their usual repertoire or original work so it wouldn’t help explain what the performance is.

The singer’s online clapback comes weeks after Harbour — the man who inspired West End Girl — finally broke his silence on the viral project.
“It was weird,” the actor told Variety.
“I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that.
“I can’t really say that much more, because it’s my private life. In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that.”
Allen will be bringing her West End Girl tour Down Under in October of this year.
