Lille chief backs Nicolas Pepe for Arsenal success and makes Cristiano Ronaldo comparison

Nicolas Pepe is guaranteed to be a success at Arsenal because he possesses the same traits as Cristiano Ronaldo.

That's the view Pepe's former Sporting Director at Lille, Luis Campos, who sanction the £72m deal between the club and Arsenal this summer.

The Ivory Coast winger had a phenomenal season in north France last term scoring 22 goals and registering 11 assists in Ligue 1.

However, Pepe has had a quiet start to life in the Premier League in north London, with one goal and two assists to his name in eight appearances.

That solitary strike came from the penalty spot, meaning the 24-year-old is yet to find the net from open play.

However, as Pepe adjusts and acclimatises to his new surroundings, he has been boosted by a compliment of the highest order from his former employers.

Lille's Sporting Director, Campos, has insisted he has no doubts that Pepe will be a huge success at Arsenal, due to his hunger and desire to learn, just like Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.

"In my opinion one of the characteristics of a top, top player is that they like football," Campos told Sky Sports.

Arsene Wenger accepts Legend award

"I remember working with Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe: they know everything about football. Mbappe knew all the results of the second division in France.

"Nicolas Pepe is like that. He’s another example of the importance of a player liking football.

"After a game he watches the whole game again two times, to make himself more perfect."

Pepe's confidence will be boosted by a strong display against Bournemouth prior to the international break, as his corner was header home by David Luiz to lift the Gunners up to third and secure a narrow 1-0 home win.

Having struggled in recent games, such as away at Manchester United, the emergence of Bukayo Saka has put pressure on Pepe to retain his spot in Unai Emery's starting XI, with Alexandre Lacazette set to return to full fitness after the two-week break.
