Lilian Greenwood MP will seek 'reassurances' from Football Association over Notts County crisis as planned meeting revealed

Lilian Greenwood MP  will discuss the crisis engulfing Notts County with the Football Association next week, Nottinghamshire Live can reveal.

The Labour MP for Nottingham South will meet football governance chief David Newton and public affairs executive Augusta Riddy in Westminster.

The FA responded to Ms Greenwood after her appearance on

She had told the outgoing PM that Notts faced the real threat of extinction because of an unpaid debt to the taxman, with the sale of a club to a Danish consortium yet to be completed.

But she hopes her meeting with the FA will finally give the supporters some answers.

“We wrote to the FA on June 26 to raise the concerns about the issues affecting Notts County, but after PMQs on Wednesday, they got in touch to arrange a meeting,” she said.

“I wanted to make everybody aware of the crisis that is happening at the club which plays such an important part in the community.

“Come to the end of the meeting,  hopefully, we will have some answers for the supporters who are rightfully worried about their club’s future.

“We will also hope to be given reassurances that the FA are taking every step necessary to ensure the next owners are fit and proper to take over the club.”

The news comes with Notts just 12 days away from a return to the High Court to face a winding-up petition issued by HMRC over a tax debt of at least £250,000.

The case has already been adjourned three times in order to allow a proposed sale of the club to be completed.

In the meantime, staff still remain unpaid, but the club’s independent fund-raising organisation Lifeline this week donated £25,000 to help those affected.

A further £4,000 was raised by the club’s official supporters’ association, with staff already making use of the emergency fund.

On the pitch, Notts are due to play their first home game since April on Saturday when they face a pre-season friendly with Walsall.

The game is set to go ahead despite the players not being paid since the end of June.
