Lil Nas X has been arrested and hospitalised following an altercation with police, after he was spotted walking down a highway in his underwear.
According to reports, the rapper and singer — whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill — was approached by police in Los Angeles at around 6am on Thursday morning (US time) while walking along Ventura Boulevard in the neighbourhood of Studio City.
Video footage obtained by TMZ and captured prior to the arrest shows Lil Nas X wearing only his underwear and cowboy boots and claiming he was en route to a party.
“Didn’t I tell you to put the phone down?” the singer says in the footage.
“Give me that phone so I can throw it.”
At one point, Lil Nas X was seen putting an orange traffic cone on his head.
Shortly after, the Grammy-winner was reportedly confronted by police, at which point he “charged at officers and was taken into custody”, police spokesperson Charles Miller said, per 9News.
According to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation (per NBC News), Lil Nas X punched an officer twice in the face.
Police were reportedly unsure as to whether the singer was on any substances or in a state of mental distress, and first took him to hospital on suspicion of a possible overdose.
There was no update on his condition, but the singer was released from hospital and taken to jail a few hours later, where he was then booked for a misdemeanour for obstructing an officer.
The singer was taken to Valley Jail in Van Nuys, near where he was first arrested.
Lil Nas X first gained attention with his smash hit song, “Old Town Road”, for which he won a Grammy Award in 2020.
Earlier this year, he released his second studio album, Dreamboy.
