'Like driving through a river' - Why this Clifton road keeps flooding

Drivers in Clifton have been left "baffled" by a road that repeatedly floods when it rains and fear for the damage it may do to their cars.

The road in question is Clifton Lane, in the left hand lane, just before the Crusader Roundabout which leads to the A453.

On Thursday, November 7, a large pool of water had built-up on the road just before the traffic lights which left car wheels submerged in water.

And local residents have said it happens regularly after rain.

Highways England is responsible for the road and explained to Nottinghamshire Live the flooding is caused by a blockage in the drain gully at that section of the road.

The issue gets cleared out by the highways team when it floods, but drivers have said they will avoid the lane because they are not sure how deep it goes and don't want to damage their cars.

Tom Jacobs, a 29-year-old dad of Clifton said: "It's been like this for ages. It's weird. It's like driving through a river.

"I hate it when the light is red and you've just got to sit in the water. It happens every time it rains heavily. It's and odd one."

Karen Jones, 44, of Clifton, added: "It is a bit baffling. The drainage must not be very good. It happens a lot here, but not really anywhere else I know in Clifton. It's just that one drain.

"I think drivers are a bit wary of it. I don't like to go in it so I'll go in the right hand lane if I can. I don't want water going in the exhaust or anything like that."

And Neil Poole, 55, of Clifton, said: "It just looks a bit of a mess. Some cars fly through it no bother. But I'm not sure it should be that regular of an occurrence. I hope it gets fixed.

"I know flooding has been bad in other areas recently, but this happens regularly after rainfall here."
