Ligue 1 'won't resume until mid-June' in bleak omen for Premier League

Premiere Ligue president Bernard Caiazzo has insisted it could yet be three months at least before the French Ligue 1 commences again.

The league was indefinitely suspended on March 13 due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the country, but there had initially been hopes it could resume in April or May.

Caiazzo, however, who is in charge of the union that represents Ligue 1 clubs, thinks the severity of the situation means June is a more likely month for football to resume again.

Speaking to France Bleu , he said: "It is necessary to finish the championship at all costs, even if it means ending it in July-August and resuming in stride.

"Currently, all the clubs are losing around €250 million a month and we cannot play until the curve is reversed. That is to say in July-August, at best on June 15.

"I am very, very, very worried about all the clubs. Without state aid, within six months half of the pro clubs will file for bankruptcy.

"The five major European championships have already lost €4 billion, the French championship between €500-600m."

The Premier League are reportedly considering re-starting with games commencing on June 1 behind closed doors, although this is dependent on how the coronavirus situation progresses.

It is not clear how a delay until mid-June would affect their plans, however, with problems arising if the conclusion of this season overlaps with the proposed start of the 2020-2021 campaign.

Leagues all around Europe are trying to decide the best ways to conclude their current seasons, with the options including playing behind closed doors, playing a reduced amount of games or simply scrapping the campaign altogether.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said: "The most logical thing would be to say we cancel everything and we start again on the situation at the start of the season, a white season,

"In any case, you have to look at what the regulations say. It is the only possible decision in this context."
