Ligue 1 declared OVER as Paris Saint-Germain await title decision

The French football season is over after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe declared no team sports will be played before September.

It means Ligue 1 follows the Netherlands as the second league to end their season due to the pandemic.

The French Professional Football League had been hopeful teams could resume training within a fortnight after plans emerged earlier this month for the league to resume on June 17 and conclude on July 25.

But Philippe confirmed the decision this afternoon, with closed door games not considered possible until late summer.

Philipe said: "The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, will not be able to resume.

"It will be possible, on sunny days, to practice an individual sporting activity outdoors, obviously respecting the rules of social distancing.

"It will not be possible, neither to practice sport in covered places, nor team or contact sports."

It's clear the French government do not view restarting football as a priority in the nation's battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

A meeting will be held in May to decide league placings, with Paris Saint-Germain 11 points clear of Marseille at the table summit.

At the bottom, Toulouse, Amiens and Nimes occupy the relegation places.

In Ligue 2, Lorient lead Lens by a single point at the top with AJ Ajaccio just a further point behind.

UEFA have set a May 25 deadline for associations to finalise their plans for the remainder of the season, with the Premier League and Bundesliga pushing to restart in the near future.

A UEFA statement said: "'National associations and/or leagues should be in a position to communicate to UEFA by May 25, 2020, the planned restart of their domestic competitions — including the date of restart and the competition format."
