Ligue 1 rejects expanded top flight as court battle mirrors Hearts and Partick Thistle fight

The French football league has announced that it has kicked out the chance to incorporate relegated teams in a reconstructed 22-side Ligue 1 campaign for next season.

In news that Hearts and Partick Thistle will be following closely, the LFP's general assembly voted by a majority of three to one in favour of maintaining the status quo.

The French top flight currently operates with 20 teams.

This means Toulouse and Amiens, who have been embroiled in legal battles to remain in the French top flight after being relegated following the coronavirus league shutdown have been relegated again.

The league was cut short by 10 matchdays leaving the clubs at the bottom facing the dreaded drop and all the financial pain that entails.

The vote was called after the French National Court had deemed the initial decision to relegate the two sides back in April was unlawful.

The league’s reasoning for taking the step was due to a charter signed between the LFP and the FFF which expire son June 30.

A new charter is expected to take its place which will stipulate that the top two divisions will each contain 20 teams, a move that will be finalised in the weeks ahead.

The SPFL is currently going through legal woes of its own as Hearts' chair Ann Budge takes the organisation to court in conjunction with Partick Thistle.
