Ligue 1 chiefs make decision over Europe and relegation places - with Lyon missing out

Ligue 1 have settled on the league's finals standings just days after finishing the season.

The French Prime Minister announced that no sport in the country would be played until September leaving football with no choice but to draw the season to a close.

But unlike the Eredivisie, authorities have opted to decide on the champions, European qualifiers and relegation.

PSG have been awarded the title - their seventh in eight years - given their 12 point lead at the top.

Marseille had been their closest challengers for much of the season and have been named the runners-up.

It means Andre Villas-Boas leads the club into the Champions League in his first year with Rennes also joining them.

Lille have been placed in fourth with Reims completing one of the stories of the year by finishing in fifth.

The former European Cup finalists were only promoted two years ago and will now compete in Europe.

Nice are the third and final club to represent the French in the Europa League.

All this means that Lyon have failed to qualify for Europe and could face a battle in retaining the likes of Moussa Dembele and Houssem Aouar who have been linked with moves away.

At the other end of the table both Toulouse have been relegated which has been met with an angry reaction from the club's president.

He told the LFP & FFF in a letter that "Any decision to relegate TFC based on provisional standings would be unjust, unequal & legally unfounded."

Toulouse were 14 points adrift of 18th having picked up 13 points all year and Ameins will join them Ligue 2 next term but Nimes have survived due to the cancelation of the play-off system.

Lorient and Lens have both been promoted from the second tier.
