Lightwater Valley theme park to be prosecuted after boy, 7, was thrown 30ft from ride

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will prosecute the operator of Lightwater Valley theme park after a seven-year-old boy was thrown from a ride.

The child was launched from the Twister ride at the park in North Stainley, Ripon, Yorkshire, in May last year.

The youngster fell around 20 to 30 ft and was airlifted to hospital, although his condition was not life-threatening.

A HSE spokesman said: "Following the investigation by HSE, Lightwater Valley Attractions Ltd, of Sherborne, Dorset, will face a charge under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

"HSE is currently liaising with Leeds Magistrates’ Court to fix a first hearing date."

Speaking about the accident, visitor Mark Charnley, of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, previously said he saw the little boy hanging out of the back of the moving ride as his mum screamed hysterically beside him.

"We saw the little lad hanging out of the back of his carriage, his head was well behind the back of it and he was out of his restraints," the worried dad said.

“He was in the carriage with his mum, who was screaming hysterically.

“Everyone in the queue was shouting for the ride operator to stop the ride for about 10 to 15 seconds but they didn’t seem to have noticed.

“We jumped over the barrier to try and help and one man identified himself as an off duty police officer and he sort of took over."

The youngster was rushed to hospital for emergency brain surgery in July, although it was not known if the operation was linked to his injuries from the accident.

Speaking in June theme park boss Ian Cunningham said he was sorry for the "upset and anxiety" the incident has caused the boy's family.

He added: "As a father myself, I can imagine only too well how it must have felt for everyone involved when the incident happened, and in the hours since.

"Our thoughts and concerns are completely focused on the child and his family at this difficult time.

"I would like to say how sorry I am personally for the upset and anxiety that this incident has caused.

"We are committed to offering our full support to the family."
