
Fishing lamps used to lure Japanese flying squid add points of light to a night view of Hakodate, Hokkaido, as seen from the Nanae, a neighboring town to the north. The juxtaposition of the lamps on the Tsugaru Strait and the city lights on shore happens often in this season. The flying squid fishery has been suffering a poor season, which began in June, hauling in only 287 tons as of Sept. 20, down 46 percent from the same period last year.
