Lightning warning issued for Northern Ireland

The Met Office is warning people to be careful due to lightning in parts of Northern Ireland today.

In a ‘yellow’ warning issued on Saturday morning they state: “Across the east of Northern Ireland and probably parts of southwest Scotland, frequent lightning could pose a hazard during the coming hours.

“Although heavy rain is possible, lightning strikes seem the more likely hazard.”

Images on social media show lightning in Richhill, Co Armagh and Randalstown, Co Antrim.

The Met Office says lightning can cause “some short term loss of power or other utility services” or “possible damage to some buildings/structures”.

The warning is in place up until around 1pm.
