Lightning strikes in Glasgow with further thunderstorms forecast

Lightning strikes have been felt in Glasgow with further thunderstorms forecast this weekend.

After a hot and sunny start to Saturday, the city has endured a heavy downpour, thunder and lightning.

Lightning struck Pollok Country Park in the south side of Glasgow and also in Thorntonhall in East Kilbride, according to the Lightning tracker app.

Glasgow City Centre was inundated with rain shortly after 6pm, with shoppers running for shelter on Buchanan Street.

Meanwhile a yellow Met Office warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning has been issued from Sunday lunchtime (August 4) and will run until 10pm.

Experts say there is a small chance "homes and businesses could become flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes".

The warning continues: "There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life" and "where lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services and there is a small chance that communities become cut off by flooded roads."
