A lightning strike is seen a possible cause of a small fire in the roof of a house in Forde on Thursday afternoon.

ACT firefighters were called to Justice Kelly Street in Ford around 4.40pm. The street was closed to traffic by police and the roof fire was quickly contained and extinguished.

Small but intense storm cells swept through the capital on Thursday afternoon bringing gusty winds, showers to some areas and even small pockets of hail to areas such as Palmerston and Harrison.

The city's maximum of 24 degrees quickly plunged in those areas where the showers swept through, accompanied by south-easterly winds gusting up to 40km/h.

However, the Emergency Services Agency said it did not receive any calls for assistance for storm damage.

The weather bureau expected more of the small storms to pass through until late in the evening.

The weather will cool for the weekend, with an expected maximum temperature on Saturday of just 18 degrees.
