Two people have died and two others are in hospital after separate lightning strikes in the Brecon Beacons, the Prince Charles hospital in Merthyr Tydfil has said.
In one incident, three people were struck by lightning at about midday while walking together in the area around Pen y Fan mountain in Powys. Two of them, one a man in his 50s, sustained life-threatening injuries and were flown by RAF Sea King helicopter to the hospital. One of them has since died. The other person was killed by a separate strike.
A statement on the hospital’s Facebook page said: “As a result of two separate lightning strikes today in the Brecon Beacons, we can confirm that two people have died, another has been transferred to Morriston hospital because of burns, and one other person continues to receive treatment at Prince Charles hospital.”
Three fire crews were also called to a fire at a house in Ferwig near Cardigan after lightning struck its roof, according to the Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service.
After a break in the weather following a period of high temperatures, further rain is expected on Monday in the south-west of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The south-east may escape the showers, with the highest temperatures reaching about 24C (75F).
