Phil Mickelson was in jeopardy of missing his tee time Sunday morning for the final round of the BMW Championship after a lightning strike and fire at his hotel.
Mickelson made it for his 11:52 a.m. ET tee time in the final round of the BMW Championship. He started from the 10th tee on Medinah No. 3 with Brooks Koepka and Dylan Frittelli.
He posted on Twitter that he was initially unable to retrieve his clubs following the fire.
“How’s this for crazy? My hotel was struck by lighting, I was on top floor, we were evacuated and the place is on fire (only thing of mine on fire this week.) I can’t get back into my room and may miss my tee time because I am without clubs and clothes,” he posted.

Mickelson is staying at the Eaglewood, which is located about a mile from the Medinah (Ill.) Country Club clubhouse. Firefighters helped him get into the hotel to get his clubs. Mickelson arrived on course with his clubs at 11:15 a.m. ET. in flip flops. He changed into his spikes in the parking lot and was ready to go.
Mickelson was in his room when the lightning hit the roof around 8 a.m. local time. It blew out a chimney.
“Hell of a way to start the morning,” Mickelson before his round of 71 Sunday.
“Yeah, kind of a funny deal. The building got struck by lightning right above me and blew out a brick chimney and caught fire a little bit. There were 10 fire trucks. I got in my car and left and couldn’t get back. The roads were closed and the hotel was closed,” he added afterward. “But things cleared up pretty quickly. I was able to get back in and get my stuff.”
Unfortunately, Lefty’s season ended with a T-48 finish in the BMW Championship and a 47th place spot in the FedEx Cup Standings.
Only the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup Standings will advance to the Tour Championship next week at East Lake.
