Lightning strike causes fire at Naperville home

Two dogs were rescued from a home after a lightning strike caused an attic fire in west suburban Naperville.

Crews responded just after 2 p.m. Friday to the 400 block of Franklin Avenue for calls of a possible structure fire, the Naperville Fire Department said. Neighbors reported seeing flames from the back of a home at the roof line.

When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke from the roof of the two-story home, fire said. They found a small fire in the attic, and were able to keep the flames from spreading to other parts of the house.

The blaze was “quickly extinguished,” fire said. Although no one was home when the fire broke out, a neighbor managed to rescue two pet dogs before crews arrived.

An investigation found the fire was caused by a lightning strike, fire said. The home was still habitable, and a small hole in the roof was boarded up.
