DETROIT _ The Lightning made a major comeback in their matchup against the Red Wings, squeaking out of Detroit on top 5-4.
It took almost 40 minutes for the Lightning to find their groove against a Red Wings team focused on breaking a 14-game losing streak. The Red Wings jumped to a fast start, going up 3-0 early in the second period.
Then, a second-period power play goal from Steven Stamkos, who notched his 383rd career goal and tied Vincent Lecavalier's career-goal record, helped the Lightning find a spark after the flat start.
An early third-period goal from Brayden Point closed the gap to 3-2 and gave the Lightning some hope.
But ultimately it was Nikita Kucherov's goal on the power play halfway through the third period that reignited what looked like a sluggish Lightning team for much of the contest.
The third period goals didn't end there as Tyler Johnson tipped in a shot by Erik Cernak from the blueline.
It was the come back the Lightning needed heading into the final minutes against Detroit, a team that came into the game ranked second-to-last in the league at 58 points.
The goal-surge was headed mostly by Kucherov, who notched his 34th multipoint game with an assist on Point's goal. It didn't stop there as the All-Star forward notched two goals and an assist, all in the third period.
Kucherov ultimately jumped to 115 points on the season with two assists and two goals on the night, his sixth four-point game of the season.
