Lightning Quiz: NI contestants showing their skills on new BBC show made in Belfast

Northern Ireland has firmly established itself as a hotspot for film and TV - proving our people are a force to be reckoned with in front and behind the camera.

A number of Northern Irish contestants have been keeping their eyes on the prize on the new quiz show Lightning made in Belfast.

Made by Northern Irish Nice One Productions and co-produced with Fizz TV, who make 'Tipping Point' for ITV, Lightning is quiz show/game show mash-up hosted by comedian Zoe Lyons.

Six challengers compete across six rounds answering quick-fire questions as they attempt to avoid a ruthless spotlight patrolling the studio and eliminating contestants for the £3k jackpot.

The first episode saw Nigel from Ballymena show his serious quizzing skills as he makes it far in the game, but does he have what it takes to snatch the jackpot?

On Thursday's episode, Portavogie man Shay used his Northern Ireland charm on host Zoe.

When she asked was his Co Down home a big town to which he replied "no, not at all - I think there is maybe about 1,000 people that live there".

"Are you quite a big deal in Portavogie," she continued.

Shay laughed, "I like to think so, yeah. Especially now."

Lightning airs Monday-Friday at 630pm on BBC 2 and has gained a good following on social media during the shows.

Founder of Nice One Productions, Chris Jones said: "It’s exciting and a proper honour to be making LIGHTNING for BBC Daytime from Belfast, and it's created lots of local opportunities both on and off-screen."

Chris has 25+ years of experience co-devising formats and successfully working with super-indies and top talent in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin.

He is also the Belfast based Executive Producer on Mastermind and Celebrity Mastermind presented by Clive Myrie which is also made in Northern Ireland.

Chris added: "With 45 new episodes set to be recorded here later this year - exciting times for Northern Ireland's quizzers!"
