'Lightning feet, outrageous shot' - What transfer target Dominik Szoboszlai would offer Arsenal

Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Gunners were linked with a move for the Hungarian during the summer, but nothing came of the interest.

football.london understands that that initial approach was with a view to a move at the end of the this season with the 18-year-old keen on gaining experience with Salzburg before moving on to Europe’s top leagues.

Arsenal have scouted the teenager on a number of occasions, and were reported to be in attendance as Salzburg came from 3-0 down, only to lose 4-3 in the end against Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday night.

But what is it about the 18-year-old that has caught the eye?

Szoboszlai came to the fore in the second half of last season in the Austrian league, scoring three times.

And he has three goals this season, including his first Champions League goal during a 6-2 win over Genk and his first goal for Hungary

We asked Hungarian football expert Tom Mortimer about the young man during the summer transfer window.

He said: "When he is allowed space he can do anything. He has an outrageous shot with both feet - thunderbolts, curlers, chips - he can do it all. He's also got lightning feet, a wonderful passing range, great vision, super intelligence.

"He's the perfect playmaker or number eight. A little bit like a Paul Pogba-lite."

And Mortimer did not hold back when asked how good the teen star could be.

He added: "He has the potential to become one of the best players in the world. There's truly no doubt. He just needs to be nurtured right.

"He is probably the highest-rated Hungarian in the modern era, which might not sound like much, but Hungary have had many a hyped talent over recent years who've failed to live up to expectation.

"Szoboszlai seems different, though. Unlike those Hungarians of the past, his ability has accelerated massively since he burst onto the scene, and his performances at youth and senior level over the last two years have been astounding."

But Mortimer issued a word of warning over the signing of Szoboszlai.

"Szoboszlai isn't ready-made," he said. "He needs time to develop. I know Arsenal are a little different to the other top clubs in England but I still find it hard to trust them.

"He's only played half a season in the Austrian Bundesliga. What if he doesn't adapt to the Premier League straight away? Will Arsenal be patient with him? Will an ill-suited loan spell destroy his confidence?

"His physicality is probably his biggest weakness, and a loan move to a Championship club could swallow him."
