Lightning defeat Kings in shootout, 4-3

TAMPA, Fla. _ The Lightning and Kings started with a flurry of goals and ended in not only a shootout, but with extra rounds.

Steven Stamkos scored in the fourth round of the shootout, a bar-down shot, and Andrei Vasilevskiy followed with a save on Dustin Brown to give the Lightning a 4-3 win Tuesday night.

Brayden Point and Nikolai Prokhorkin scored in the original three rounds of the shootout. The Lightning had only played one shootout previously this season (a win over the Bruins in Boston).

The Lightning gave up an early two-goal lead and immediately responded to tie, as the teams combined for four goals in just over seven minutes in the first period.

Jeff Carter scored on a rebound of Kyle Clifford's original shot to put the Kings on the board 4:18 into the game. That goal broke Vasilevskiy's shutout streak at 150:13 seconds over four games.

Carter then returned the favor and assisted Clifford's goal 2:34 later. The Lightning broke down in the defensive zone, with what looked like a miscommunication on who had who. Clifford's shot deflected off Mitchell Stephens in front of the net.

Alex Killorn scored his 19th goal of the season, matching his career high about three minutes after the Kings took that two-goal lead. He fired off a wrist shot from the left circle, assisted by Alex Volkov for the rookie's first career point.

Stamkos tied the score just 1:19 after that. Tyler Johnson set up Anthony Cirelli on the original shot and Stamkos followed for the rebound.

The Kings got back on top with a power-play goal from Dustin Brown, who tipped a shot from Prokhorkin, 12 minutes into the third period.

Cedric Paquette appeared to tie the game up with six minutes to go, but the goal was waived off for a high stick on a very close call.
