Lightning and thunderstorms to bring chaos to Scotland next week as forecasters issue 48-hour weather warning

Adverse weather conditions is set to bring chaos to Scotland as forecasters have issued a 48-hour warning for thunderstorms next week.

A yellow weather warning is in place for the whole of the UK for both Monday and Tuesday.

Experts have expressed fears over flooding, lightning and potentially large hail storms during large parts of the two day period.

Some areas could see around 80mm of rainfall in the space of just three hours.

This may result in severe disruption to public transport services while some buildings could be damaged due to the conditions.

Despite the warning being in place between midnight on Monday and 11.59pm on Tuesday, the Met Office says there is “significant uncertainty in location and timing.”

A spokesperson for the weather agency said: “Areas of thunderstorms are increasingly likely to develop over the south of the UK or nearby continent late in the weekend or early next week, and will generally track north or north-westwards, potentially affecting all parts of the UK at some points during this period.

“Whilst the most intense thunderstorms, in some instances associated with large hail, will most probably be those triggered by the high temperatures of the day over England and Wales, other areas of storms producing heavy rainfall and frequent lightning could reach further north at times over Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“These could occur at any time of the day. Of the area highlighted, at present the west of Northern Ireland and west of Scotland seem less likely to be affected than other areas, but still could not be ruled out.

“Where the storms occur, rainfall totals of 30-40 mm could fall in an hour, with some locations potentially receiving 60-80 mm in 3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated.”

The expectations for the poor conditions is a stark contrast to the warmer and more settled conditions anticipated for this weekend.

Forecasters issued a level three heat health warning for the south of England as warm air blows in from the southern Europe.

Scotland will also get its share of the conditions, with temperatures set to remain in the low-to-mid 20s during some parts of Friday and Saturday.
