Lightning and heavy rain to hit UK after Euro 2020 final - before 25C heatwave arrives

Forecasters are predicting electrical storms from Monday - followed by a 25C heatwave.

Lightning and heavy rain are expected to begin on Monday afternoon as many England fans are expected to wake up with a hangover following an exuberant night watching the Euro 2020 final.

Weather experts say large areas of the country will see some heavy rain with torrential downpours likely in some places.

The Met Office predicted there could be 20-30mm of rain in an hour and more than 60mm in some places.

On its website, the forecaster said: "Slow-moving, heavy showers, with some thunderstorms, are likely to break out during Monday afternoon.

"This may lead to torrential downpours in some places with 20 to 30 mm of rain in an hour and perhaps in excess of 60 mm in some spots in two or three hours."

The forecaster added: "There is also a chance of more persistent heavy rain developing over parts of southeast England during the afternoon or evening and persisting into early Tuesday.

"Were this to occur there is a chance of 60 to 90 mm rain falling in a few spots."

In the East of England, Essex, Hertfordshire, Southend-on-Sea, Suffolk and Thurrock are expected to suffer downpours.

And in London and South East England, Bracknell Forest, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, Greater London, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight should also see some lightning and flooding.

Other areas expected to see torrential rain include Kent, Portsmouth, Reading, Slough and West Sussex, and Windsor and Maidenhead.

In South West England, Bath and North East Somerset, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire are also likely to see rain and electrical storms.

A Yellow Weather warning is in place from midday tomorrow until 11.59pm before it gives way to warmer temperatures

But torrential downpours will not last long and will be followed by predicted heatwave of 24C on Wednesday, rising to 25C from Thursday and Friday which should put a smile on faces whether tonight's game goes in England's favour or not.

Forecasters warn that during the downpours, homes and businesses could be flooded and there could be cancellations to train and bus services.

It's website said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.

"There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."
