Lighting fireworks at wrong time on Bonfire Night could land you with £5,000 fine

Bonfire Night is fast approaching this week, and many are excited to celebrate with fireworks on November 5.

However, there are certain laws you should keep in mind if having your own home firework display, unless you want to get into trouble - reports Mirror Online.

The Gov.uk website said: “You can be fined an unlimited amount and imprisoned for up to six months for selling or using fireworks illegally."

They added: “You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.”

You need to check with your local council to see what your area's local rules are but some council advise that you can be fined £5,000 for improper use.

It’s against the law for anyone to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am in England and Wales, apart from on Bonfire Night when you have up until midnight.

New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, also have different restrictions as you can enjoy fireworks on these dates up until the cut-off at 1am.

There are also laws on when retailers can legally sell fireworks too according to the Fireworks Regulations 2004.

You can buy them for private use from registered sellers between October 15 and November 10 and December 26 to December 31.

Fireworks are also legal to buy three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year.

You should always let neighbours know if you plan to have any private firework displays, as they can create stress for pets and vulnerable people.

It is also recommended, if renting a property, to check your tenancy agreement to see if there are any parts of it that restrict you from having fireworks in the property. If the agreement doesn't state anything about fireworks then it may be worth checking with a landlord anyway.
