Light a virtual candle to honour departed loved ones this Christmas

Christmas is a time for being with family and friends - but it is also a time for remembering those who can no longer be with us. The loss of a loved one can be especially difficult to bear during the festive season when memories are even keener than at other times of the year.

For centuries people have honoured departed loved ones by lighting a candle at Christmas to show that their memory still burns brightly. Now you can use our tribute map to light a virtual candle for your departed loved ones and create an online space to remember them.

Simply fill in your name, the first part of your postcode, and a personal tribute to show they remain in your thoughts. Your virtual candle will then be added to the map, where others can see it and read your message.

Please note we are pre-moderating the tributes before posting them, so your message will not appear immediately and it may take up to a few hours for it to be displayed on the map. Please bear with us as we do our best to get to every one of them as quickly as we can.

Christmas can be a difficult time for many people, especially when remembering a loved one. Asking for help may not always be easy but Samaritans volunteers are there to listen round the clock if you need to talk about what you’re going through. You can get in touch for free on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.
