The top tier of Mexican football will resume on Friday when the 2019-20 Liga MX Torneo Apertura gets underway just a few months after Tigres won silverware for the fourth season running.
Tigres return hoping to claw the Apertura crown back from Club America after three consecutive titles in this competition (2015-17), with manager Ricardo Ferretti chasing success in his ninth season at the helm.

Apertura champions America will be put under the microscope in Week 1 and play host to Monterrey Saturday, a tricky opponent that threatens to derail their title defense early on. Los Aguilas have won more Liga X trophies than any other club (13), but they’ve failed to successfully defend one since the current season format was introduced.
Puebla, who will play host in the early match, will have the honor of headlining the 2019-20 season’s first fixture at Estadio Cuauhtemoc. Both failed to reach the top eight playoff spots last time around.
Hosts Atlas will be out to beat Juarez in Friday’s other fixture at the Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara. Juarez was only founded in 2015 and will play their first season in Mexico’s first flight, though it could be too early to judge whether they belong among the country’s best. Atlas finished one point off the bottom of the Apertura table and are in greater need of improvements, while their guests will bring a new—albeit untested—quality to the division.
Puebla conceded 30 goals in the 2018 Apertura—only last-place Veracruz (40) conceded more—but it will please them to know Tijuana scored only 13 goals in 17 appearances in this contest last term.
